August 26: Trans Canada Trail National 100% Connection Celebrations

It's time to celebrate!

2017 not only marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation, it's also the year we reach 100% national connection of the Trans Canada Trail. August 26 is a day to celebrate connection and to thank our generous, devoted and fun-loving volunteers, partners and donors for their hard work in connecting The Great Trail across Canada.

Here is the detailed list of events taking place across Nova Scotia:

 

Alpine Snowmobiler Club
Port Hood Station Provincial Park, 8657 Nova Scotia Trunk 19, Port Hood

Alpine Snowmobiler Club will hold a 15-20 km bicycle ride from the Port Hood Station Park. Registration starts at 9:30 am and the ride will begin at 10:00 am, followed at noon with a BBQ and Celebration!

 

Ben Eoin Yacht Club - Bras d'Or Lakes Water Route Access Point    
4950 East Bay Highway, Ben Eoin, Cape Breton

We will be launching our new Great Trail Landing Site for the outdoor loving public of all ages. In true Cape Breton style, we will have live music, food, giveaways and lots of fun. The party will begin early enough for paddlers, rowers and kayakers to enjoy calm morning waters of the Bras d'Or Lakes. A barbecue will follow.

Carroll's Corner Mastodon Trail

Join us for foot and cycle races along the trail, a scavenger hunt, and a geocaching demonstration. There will be prizes for participants in the races as well as a barbeque and refreshments.  

 

Ceilidh Coastal Trail Association

Celtic Shores Coastal Trail

Central Cape Breton Community Ventures - Bras d'Or Lake Water Route - Iona Access Point

Canoers, kayakers and rowers are invited for a superior recreational paddle and to share in our Canada 150 celebrations at Central Cape Breton's newly designated Bras d'Or Lake Water Route, part of The Great Trail.  There will be healthy food throughout the course of our event and you'll be treated to some of our area's finest local talent on the beautiful shores of Iona.

 

Chestico Trails Association
Port Hood Station Provincial Park, 8657 Nova Scotia Trunk 19, Port Hood

The Chestico Trails Association starting from the Port Hood Station Park, will have a 5 km walk, run and/or bike ride for ALL ages and a 2 km for the young and young at heart. Registration starts at 10:00 with the run/walk/bike beginning at 10:30, followed at noon with a BBQ and celebration!

  

Cobequid Eco-trails Society

Registration at 9:30 am
Meet at 5300 Hwy #311. Please preregister for the event. There will be transportation to 734 Glen Road (1/2 hour drive). We would hike back to our cars using the above trails. Approx. 5 hours. A rocky, rooted trail. Rated difficult.

 

Cole Harbour Parks & Trails Association

Eskasoni First Nation - Eskasoni Goat Island / Eskasoni Cultural Journeys

This event will be an open house style for Goat Island and Eskasoni Cultural Journeys. Visitors will be able to interact with our heritage interpreters and take part in a smudge and traditional dance, and will be able to sample traditional mikmaq food. We will provide information on how we are part of The Great Trail and have access points for canoeing and learning about the Bras d'Or Lakes as well as the Eskasoni First Nation and Mi'kmaq culture.           

 

Grand Narrows Waterfront Development Society

Join us for Kayak demonstrations including water safety and trip planning. There will be a community market with baked goods, preserves, vegetables, arts & crafts. Participants encouraged to share pics by entering photo contest. - TTC themed, Face Painting & Games. Guided nature walk around pond. First Nations trail blessing and local live music. Fireworks display over the Barra Strait as a grand finale.            

 

Harbour Authority of Pictou Landing

Inverness Country Trails Federation

Join us along The Great Trail for young and old, complete with giveaways, a BBQ, musicians, and trail events. 

 

Inverness Shean Trail Committee
Kilometre 89 of the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail

Join us for a sunset gathering at the trailhead and go for a 2-5 km walk/hike/bike. We will then return and have a celebration with music, food/barbecue and children's events.    

            

Lake Ainslie Development Association

Join us at the MacDonald House Museum. We will have food and drinks provided on site. Music and door prizes. After the celebration, participants can choose from a number of activities: a guided hike/walk with interpretation of history of the trail area, a self guided mountain bike or walk or hike, or a painting workshop on the trail with a local artist.    

 

Mabou Rivers Trail Committee

Join us for a 5 km walk and 20 km bicycle ride early in the day, followed by a BBQ and non-alcoholic refreshments, entertainment, games and prizes.

This event will bring all Pictou County TCT partners together in a multi-community celebration that will encourage participation throughout our region, showing the best of each community. It will be an exciting challenge, and trail fans will experience something special on each trail. There will be prizes in each community, as well as a grand prize for the winner who visits each trail and completes the challenges first.

Potlotek First Nation

Potlotek First Nation will host an open BBQ and a fun day of canoeing and kayaking. Activities will get underway on the mainland side of the National Historic Site, Chapel Island. Followed by storytelling in a teepee and fireworks at dusk. Community members and visitors alike will have an opportunity the experience the atmosphere of the historic Island and the peaceful views of the scenic islands.

 

Tatamagouche Area Trails Association
Nelson Memorial Park, Butter Trail, Tatamagouche

Join us for hikes, walks and bikes for all ages along the Butter Trail.  Festivities will then take place at Nelsons Park. A BBQ will commence at noon followed by cake. There will be face painting and a helium balloon station. Music will be supplied by local musicians. Tatamagouche Street Train available on Trail for elders.      

 

Town of Mulgrave

Community trail celebrations on the Scotia Trail in Mulgrave. The community will be invited to explore the trail, fun activities for the whole family, entertainment, and a BBQ.           

 

Town of New Glasgow

We will be hosting a day of trail celebration on New Glasgow's historic Sampson Trail. Participants will have the opportunity to explore landscape on foot, bike or kayak! 10 kayaks, three paddle boards and seven bikes will be available for residents of the community to use free of charge.

 

Town of Westville   
Acadia Park, Westville

A mindfulness trail day featuring meditation and yoga, following by a guided walk on the trail at Acadia Park. There will be healthy snacks and music playing during the day. Wagon rides and kite flying will be on site to ensure the day is fun for all ages. The day will be free of charge and will focus on recharging through nature.            

 

Whycocomagh Development Commission

A community hike, breakfast and ceilidh. The whole community is invited to join us for the first annual trail event, including a running clinic.           

 

Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre Association

Join us for a free community BBQ with live entertainment. Our event would include launching from the Waycobah First Nation Blue Way Trail access point and paddling to the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre.
