Keen Canada Fundraising Program

Keen Canada is committed to the Canadian outdoors, getting people outside and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

• Upload photos to Boots Give Back and Keen will donate $5 to the organization that you    choose.

• When pictures of boots (or shoes or sandals or rollerblades) are uploaded to Keen’s website, Keen will contribute to one of the following organizations based on the user’s choice – the Trans Canada Trail, the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Project Canoe and Wildlife Rescue.

• TCT contributions will be distributed to our partner organizations in each province (as per a breakdown provided by Keen Canada on website submissions).

• Keen Canada’s goal is to receive up to 15,000 boot photos between June 1 and October 31, 2010, which will generate a total donation among the four groups of up to $75,000.

MONEY FOR PROVINCIAL GROUPS

• Trans Canada Trail will divide the money it receives (less 10% for marketing and administrative costs) among provincial and territorial partners based on the percentage of boot pictures from the different provinces.

• Keen Canada will track how many people have uploaded photos for the TCT and the provinces from which they were received (Breakdown available here - http://www.keencanada.ca/BootsGiveBack/donationsbreakdown.aspx )

WIDE VARIETY OF PROJECTS

• Provincial organizations may use the funds for projects of their choice in three areas: trail construction, trail stewardship and volunteer programs. A brief plan for the use of funds must be submitted to TCT by the provincial group so that TCT can report back to Keen Canada.

 INTERNATIONAL APPALACHIAN TRAIL NOVA SCOTIA

Invites you to attend our Chapter Meeting

Wednesday, September 15th
4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

At the Second Cup
Sunnyside Mall, 1595 Bedford Hwy
Bedford, NS

Limited Seating.  Please RSVP if you plan to attend!

The Nova Scotia chapter of the International Appalachian Trail (SIA-IAT) would like to extend a warm invitation to attend our bi-monthly chapter meeting.  Our goal is to raise the profile of this project, form community and regional committees, recruit volunteers and business partners, prepare trail guides and materials, and create a continuous walking trail route from the PEI ferry terminal in Caribou to the NL ferry terminal in North Sydney.

The International Appalachian Trail is a 3,000 km international mountain walking trail route stretching from Mount Katahdin, Maine, through New Brunswick to the Gaspé region of Québec, then to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the west coast of the Island of Newfoundland.  It connects with the Appalachian Trail(3,505 km), the Benton MacKaye Trail (96 km), the Georgia Pinhoti Trail (225 km), the Alabama Pinhoti Trail (209 km), and the Keys-Everglades Roadwalk (281 km) to form the 9,000 km Eastern Continental Trail.  The SIA-IAT is now extending “across the pond” to Western Europe, putting Nova Scotia at the centre of this Trans Atlantic Appalachian trail network.  Already, the NS IAT chapter plays an important role in this international organization as the central point of travel, and hosts the annual SIA-IAT Council Meeting every year in Halifax, with delegates attending from the United States, Eastern Canada, Greenland, and Europe.

The entire length of the SIA-IAT in Nova Scotia is 465 km, extending from Caribou to North Sydney.  It joins the IAT route from Maine, New Brunswick, Québec and Prince Edward Island to the IAT route in Newfoundland and Labrador, and passes through wilderness, rural and urban centres.  It connects scenic, historic and recreational areas in many communities and offers exciting health and fitness, tourism, and recreational opportunities for our province.

Seating is Limited
So please RSVP if you plan to attend!

Take Me Outside Week
September 20-26

Take Me Outside Week is a new project coordinated by Recreation Nova Scotia to support a growing “back to nature” movement as we invite more children and youth out into the great outdoors.

While still in the initial stages of planning, we wanted to let our various partners and stakeholders know about Take Me Outside Week as early as possible. More information will come over the next six weeks or so. Organizations or families and small informal groups can get involved. Both will be able register online and pledge to participate in Take Me Outside Week. More details are found at
http://www.recreationns.ns.ca/files/TakeMeOutsideWeekIntroJun16-10.pdf.

Organizations may register events they organize and families and small groups may register their plans to take a child or children outside. We hope to have online registration available in early August. However, we encourage organizations to plan their events ahead of time and let us know by emailing
wonder@senseofwonderee.ca.

Recreation Nova Scotia is coordinating Take Me Outside Week in partnership with Sense of Wonder Environmental Education and the Sharing Nature Foundation. Funding partners include the IWK Community Grants, the Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection and Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Geocaching Challenge Launch Event

October 16-17

ACGA is pleased to let its membership know that ACGA is currently working with Kejimkujik National Park to create a new geocaching challenge with the launch event coming on October 16-17 2010!

If you had the opportunity to log the 22 geocaches that ACGA have placed in Fundy & Cape Breton Highlands National Park, then you will have a good idea what to expect, or maybe not...

THIS WILL BE A CHALLENGE!!

I am telling you now that this geocaching challenge will be unlike anything you've seen in a National Park.

You will have to hike, snowshoe or cross country ski close to 30kms;

You will have to portage or walk across a frozen lake;

You will have to back country overnight, or hike a really, really long day;

You will be encouraged to find the caches at night, and without a GPS.

TELL ME MORE!!!!

I can't! That's all I have at this time, you will need to keep an eye on this URL (http://bit.ly/ACGA_KEJI) for ALL of the details, including the launch event on October 16-17, youtube videos, passport & cache details (yes we will give out the details 1-2 days before the event).

We hope everybody can make plans to come by the park on October 16th 2010 for the launch event. We'll have the group camping shelter ready for event base activities.

Disclaimer:

1. Note that you will NOT be able to complete the challenge during the launch event. It is recommended to book an overnight.

2. The reward item will be trackable on geocaching.com

3. The geocaches will be winter friendly and available all year.

Regards,
The Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association Forum Team.
